What is the Right Preschool Enrollment Age?

right preschool enrollment age

You’ve just moved into a new home and community. There are a lot of things going on trying to settle in and you have a young child (or children). Now you are wondering; what is the right preschool enrollment age for your son and/or daughter? Some believe you should start as early as 2 or 2 1/2. However, it really comes down to what exactly your child can handle. You first need to determine if your child is emotionally, socially, cognitively and physically ready to be a part of a classroom with structured learning and other children.

Almost every parent thinks they know when their child is ready to enroll in preschool. It takes time to ask others that know your child well if they feel they too think your child is ready. Ask their grandparents (even though most grandparents are a little bias). You can also ask; babysitters, doctors and other people that know your child. Demographics and distance can play a role as well. Say you are looking into preschool enrollment near West Bloomfield, which is close to our Waterford child care center.  Your boy or girl might have more exposure to the public than if you lived in a more rural community in Northern Michigan.

Depending on the preschool, most will expect your child to have a certain set of skills, such as potty-trained. Some other skills needed for preschool would be general hygiene such as washing hands, eating on their own and sleeping on their own. Also, the ability to be away from their parents. Some children are very attached to their parents, so practice spending time away from your child so they can become more independent.

How Old Do Kids Start Preschool?

At Paradigm Care and Enrichment Center, we offer preschool for 3 and 4-year-old children. The 3-year-old preschool program starts off with each child receiving a personal alphabet book and a weekly letter “name” focus.  This program focuses on writing their name. It also encourages proper pencil grip and fine motor muscle exercises.

The next step up is the 4-year-old preschool program. This program builds on what they learned from the previous year. For the 4-year-old program, they begin the year with a personal letter “sound” book. They continue to practice writing and start to learn to read. The 4-year-old “pre k” school-age children are taught the essential skills they need that prepare them to enter Kindergarten.

If you live in West Bloomfield Twp., Union Lake or any of the surrounding communities near our location in Waterford MI, Paradigm preschool enrollment is open year round.  When you decide your child is at the “right” preschool enrollment age, please call or Contact us. We will schedule a full tour of our childcare center, or answer any questions you may have.
